Indonesia held Thailand to 1-1 on the opening day of their Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group 2 tie at the National Tennis Development Centre, Muang Thong Thani yesterday. Indonesia’s Christopher Rungkat in the opening rubber gave his team a victory as he outclassed Kittipong Wachiramanowong 6-2, 7-6 (3), 6-0.
Then Thailand’s numero uno Danai Udomchoke saved Thailand from a sweep with a comfortable 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 win against Elbert Sie in the second singles.
Thailand’s twins Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana meet Aditya Hari Sasongko and David Agung Susanto in the doubles today.
Ranked 478 in the world, Rungkat was much too strong for No. 534 Wachiramanowong who made a lot of unforced errors. Kittipong said he felt rusty after a one-month lay-off due to a shoulder injury. “I was not in top form today. He played very well,” he said.
